Departure to the region of wine (Kakheti), visit Telavi, Tsinandali, Sighnaghi, return back to the Tbilisi in the evening.
Alaverdi friary is among ancient monasteries on Georgia’s territory. Its history goes back to the period between 11th-15th centuries when Kakheti Kingdom reached its apogee in political and economical affairs. Murals and old paintings cannot be left without attention as they show the pictures and life scenes of many saints and royals.
Ikalto Monastery is a very nice and cozy place not far from Telavi. This complex looks tiny compared to other Georgian grand churches. Ikalto monastery used to be an academy where the well-known and cherished Georgian writer Shota Rustaveli spent his days in studying literature and Old Georgian writings (creator of ‘The Knight in the Panther’s Skin’).
Shuamta Monastery Complex is divided into two parts – Akhali Shuamta (New Shuamta) and Dzveli Shuamta (Old Shuamta). Old Shuamta dates back to the 5th century and consists of three ancient temples. A small place like Dzveli Shuamta has experienced a lot throughout a long oppressive history of Georgia known for its exotic conquerors. This place is remote from the lively Telavi and is a perfect spot to take photos with nature on the background.
New Shuamta is a nunnery which differs a lot from the Old Shuamta, both in history and architecture. There is a legend that this complex was built by Kakhetian Queen Tina. In childhood she had a dream of a place where she had to build a big orthodox cathedral. In her adulthood she discovered the place and erected the temple where she took the veil.
Telavi Wine Cellar is a must-see place which was founded in 1915. Technology of Georgian winemaking takes roots from the Wine Cellar in Telavi where wine was kept in clay jugs put in the ground. The Company combines the art of ancient traditions with the modern technologies in Georgian winemaking.
After sightseeing of Telavi, we will visit the new technological factory Teliani Valley, founded in 1997. It is a successor of the traditional Georgian wine production using the modern technologies and the knowledge of motivated young professionals.
Leaving for a beautiful village of Tsinandali. We’ll visit the amazing botanical garden and the Museum of Prince Alexandre Chavchavadze, notable Georgian poet, Tsinandali Wine Factory and the enoteca with the Collection of the oldest wines.
Drive to Sighnaghi, famous with its wines and carpets. The way takes us to Temo Papa’s private cellar, the travelers’ favorite place. Grandfather Temo is a representative of the Kakhetian peasant, very kind and hospitable. Return to Tbilisi. Overnight at the hotel in Tbilisi.
Ananuri is known for its mighty Ananuri Castle that used to be a royal residence. It stands just at the shore of the beautiful Zhinvali Water Reservoir.
On the way to Kazbegi we will pass Gudauri and stop by the soviet structure ‘People’s Friendship’. There is an amazing mountain view.
Trip to Kazbegi is a breathtaking tour through the Georgian Military road. Kazbegi is situated in an alpine region (2170 meters) where mountains of stunning beauty wrapped in gentle grey clouds surround you.
Rout to Gergeti church is one of the most well-known tourist destinations. The church is right at the top of the high mountain and it takes time and courage to take a walking tour up to the mountain peak. After visiting Kazbegi we will go back to Tbilisi.
It is impossible to come to Georgia without having a chance to travel to Mtskheta. It is a former capital of Georgia but now people mostly visit it to see Svetitskoveli Cathedral. This ancient cathedral was one if the first sparks of Christianity in Georgia as Svetitskhoveli was built in the 5th century. It is traced as the first church built on the territory of Georgia.
Jvari Monastery is near Mtskheta with a dreamlike view over the merging rivers Aragvi and Mtkvari. This place is situated on a peak of a mountain and drags you in a thought of all the monks and travelers who were looking for overnight stay in the middle of fields.
The next destination is the cave city of Uplistsikhe, near Gori. They say Uplitsikhe existed in 1000 B.C. and had tight connection with the ancient Mesopotamia. Now it represents a stone complex with caves that used to be rooms and cellars.
Stalin’s House-Museum in Gori reveals facts and spills truth on the life of a Soviet leader. The building of the museum was built near the house where Stalin was born so the place is historical indeed. After Gori the next stop will be in Borjomi.
Borjomi is a city surrounded by mountains which are of deep green color. We will go to the City Park and fill up bottles with mineral water. The city is not very big and can be walked through less than in an hour and a half. The air is fresher than in any other big city in Georgia.
Bakuriani is not far from Borjomi but is hidden higher in the mountains. It is a popular ski resort but is not less popular in summer either. Compared to other cities we will have visited by so far it might seem rural and simple. Bakuriani is famous for its three staged ropeway. By the end of the way you occur at the top of the mountain hidden in the mist.
Rabati is a big complex that includes a church, mosque, synagogue, a little park, historic museum and even registry office. It is not easy to clarify when Rabati Fortress was built though it is known that it was badly damaged in the 14th century by Tamerlan. In 2012 the territory underwent a massive reconstruction.
Vardzia complex may remind you of Uplistsikhe but it is many times bigger. Travelling to Vardzia is an unforgettable experience as you climb up and down multi-storey cave complex that also has underground paths that used to be illuminated by torches in the 12th century.
Visiting Vardzia and Rabati in one day is time-consuming so in the evening we will go back to Borjomi.
